I am a big fan of Joey over at Pheisty Blog; I keep up with her via Blog Lines. (if you love reading a lot of blogs, and you aren't using Blog Lines, you are really missing out)
Her writing is clear, concise, and very objective; she's a conservative who calls out the bullshit from both sides of the fence. This week, her column on Letterman's Sara Palin jokes really hit the nail on the head; most especially since I have been thinking about the hypocrisy of the left a lot the last few weeks.
I'm still organizing my own thoughts on the matter, but in the meantime, I wanted to share with you some of what I consider to be the highlights of her post. Read the entire post here.
I think most reasonable people agree that the Palin jokes on Letterman’s show the other night were disgusting, sexist, and mean-spirited. However, a lot of people–including the hags on ABC’s ‘The View’–have made the point that because Palin is an abstinence advocate, and because her teenage daughter got pregnant, she’s somehow due jokes about her daughter getting ‘knocked up’ in Yankee Stadium.
.....Sarah Palin and her daughter didn’t deserve what Letterman did to them, and they especially didn’t deserve it simply because they happen to be self-professed imperfect people (just as you and I are) who are doing their best to live up to a high moral standard.
I must admit, however, that I do understand the whole hypocrisy thing…Let’s look at Al Gore.
Gore preaches his green religion everywhere his big, gas-guzzling jet will take him, and then returns to his multi-million dollar mansion that must require an amazing amount of fossil fuels just to keep it running.
The difference between Gore and Palin is that Palin isn’t attempting to legislate her religion on people by making them wear chastity belts until marriage, but Gore is attempting to legislate his morals by forcing the entire country (and world) to live by a standard that he preaches to us about but doesn’t find necessary to live out himself. Yet he isn’t called out by the washed-up biddies on ‘The View’ for not practicing what he preaches.
Palin isn’t going around pointing out unwed, single mothers and telling them that they must repent, become chaste, or burn in hell. Gore, on the other hand, is wagging his self-righteous finger at the rest of humanity and essentially telling them that if they don’t repent from their evil, polluting ways, they will be shunned from the enlightened portion of society, and will ultimately be burned alive for their sins…all while he lives a far more ‘polluting’ lifestyle than you or I ever could.
So when your relativist friends tell you that Palin and her family deserve what they’re getting because she’s a ‘hypocrite’, bring up Al Gore and see how quickly they shut their own self-righteous yaps. Also remind them that they themselves have professed to be the tolerant ones, while they point c0nservatives and call us bigoted hatemongers.
